Hairloss Update: 6cm Milestone and no more Irondeficiancy

Länger sind sie auf jeden Fall geworden. Fast 10cm sogar.
Obviously my hair grew. Even about 10cm!

Again some months have passed and it is time for a new comparison. Well and this time there are even more reasons to show off as I hit two magic levels again:
First: my hairthickness grew back to 6cm ponytailcircumference! This is a magic border for me as I can tell you after many years of experience with shedding and regrowing, that under 6cm (very) long hair is really, really hard to maintain or even grow. Under 5cm we are in a range where every centiemter of length becomes a struggle, but over 6cm hair starts to be almost normal in handling, styling and growing. And also the very long lengths come back into reach.

Also the thickness grew downwards. White is THE colour to torture yourself but also the colur which is best for a documentation of thickness like this.

What is even better: I have finally beaten my irondeficiancy! This post is explicitely about my personal experiences as I am so happy now, but I plan a post with general information about hairloss due to irondeficiancy soon.
I suffered from documented irondeficiancy since summer 2011 until last year. So right at first the most important information: Be patient and stay on track. This topic really needs time to be solved finally.

Fluffy LWB: nothing spectacular. But my hairline in the nape thickend up again.
My personal causes of the deficiancy: I have ulcerative colitis and due to that my resorbtion of nutrients is less effective than it is for healthy people.
I took the pill over several years without monthly pause (primarily as a medication against other issues, contraception was just a sideeffect, not the other way round) and I was finally able to stop taking that medication early 2011. After that I got my menstruation back and the monthly lack of blood combined with my malabsorbtion led to the irondeficiancy very quickly (ferritin level was by summer at only 16ng/dl). I have no ferritin level from before that, but I have a certain feeling that it could not have been the best even before. Indications for this conclusions are my fingernail growth and my overall energylevel, but really, this is just coffee cup reading.

Stramm gewickelter LWB: Siehe oben, keine Veränderung außer am Nackenhaarnasatz.
Tightly wrapped LWB: as above, nothing worth mentioning besides the hairline in the nape.

Symptombehandlung/Supplemente
Treatment of the symptoms/supplements: At first I took pills containing iron, but I could tolerate them. And not tolerating these is much more nasty with a colitis... So we switched to injections. I got both: Ferrinject and Ferrlecit and tolerated both really well. No sideeffects. To level up my ferritin we started with weekly injections, for holding the level we prolonged to every other week and then once per month over a longer time until I could transition to longer intervals as I worked on solving the underlying causes of my deficiancy. So I came to once every six months and finally could wean off completely. At the same time, for now almost 1,5 years I supplemented with milder oral helpers like Floradix, Rotbäckchensaft and chewable tablets from Amway/Nutrilite. And this is what I still do irregularly. The tablets are the best to tolerate for me, no cramps, no other sideeffects.

Badabuuuumm!
Badabooom! This is a change! Under 5cm to around 5,5cm to 6cm ponytailcircumference. The hairline looks thick and neat all over. Especially the temples are now again flawless.
Ursachenbehandlung
Treatment of the causes: To take the pill again to get rid of my menstruation again was no option for me.  So I restarted my research about digestion and really got into depth this time. Like this I optimized my nutritional intake as well as my overall diet. Keep in mind: due to my colitis this diet is very individual. What you want or have to eliminate or eat much more is something you have to find out for yourself. But as always: whole foods, clean eating, as unprocessed as possible, fresh, lots of veggies, no toxins, no chemical additives only small amounts of sugar, white flour etc. Besides that I always have a look at the combination of foods rich in iron so that I don't eat them at the same time (or close) with foods which inhibt the resorbtion of iron to my system. Which is basically: no combination with coffee, green or black tea, dairy or anything rich in calcium. But foods rich in iron are a good combination to foods rich in vitamin C. As I don't eat dairy (with only tiny exceptions from the rule), I drink no coffe and black and green teas are something I consume really rarely too that was no big deal for. And even if the combination is not always perfect: I am just human and I primarily eat to feel satisfied and energetic and the nutrient combination comes at second place. You don't have to be perfect here. At least I decided that I don't have to.
Just with my change in diet I could go to injection intervalls of every 3-4 months. The final leap off this suppplementation was made possible by exercise. Something I NEVER ever expected. In fact I feared that being more active will soak up more nutrients and will kick me back into an even deeper deficiancy. But I was told from many sides: it is the other way round. Exercises boosts the metabolism, helps to work more effectively. And besides that: when I exercise I eat more as I need more calories of course. But with the food I eat I not only absorb calories but also more nutrients.

Loosely braided but I have the impression not as loosely as I braided on the other two pics. The braid looks even and smooth. Nor regrowing thickness visible in the nape by now.
To draw back: This took me over 4 years! 4 years in which I stayed on track the whole time. And again: I am no example for everybody due to my colitis. The healing process can be much faster when you are healthy. On the other hand, it can also be much slower when you are less disciplined than I was and am. Discipline with foods is somewhat easy for me as I have not only the reward before my nose, but also the painful punishment  in my back, if I am not strict enough. And pain is a big motivation to get things right. A bigger motivation than "just" having fuller hair maybe, in some months or years...

Eng geflochten.
Tightly braided. Nice, even and smooth again. And when you know where you are supposed to look at, then you might see a first hint of regrowing thickness in the first two brading stitches.

Summary: Stay on track, find a doctor who helps you with the documentation and the supllements, be good to you, eat well and move your body. Like this, you are more than half way through.

P.S.: My colitis fell into the longest deep sleep now since I got my diagnosis. I am completely free of symptoms and medication. The only thing which stayed with me is a certain tendency of my colon to act like a diva when I am stressed. I get easily bloated and look pregnant like in the second trimester then. This is my buzzer, my warning sign that I have to slow down and take care of me. And that is what I do. The way to my colons heart goes not only through my stomach, it also demands its beauty sleep.
